Actually in Peru they spell it T I E M P O, but the fact remains. Every moment spent in search of nutritious food and the material needs of the children is time not spent with the children.
Interestingly, the more awareness we create, the more need we uncover. Since our original project in Rio Seco, we have been invited into 4 other communities within our reach. Changes for New Hope is currently operating on zero working capital. Each Dollar/Sole is spent as it is received. Support for the project is derived almost entirely from local vendors donating fruits and vegetables, anti-parasite and anti-anemia medicines. Local university students, university faculty, and international volunteers generously donate their time and efforts. This is a poor region, even by Peruvian standards, and food, materials and clothing needs continue to surpass the present donation levels. When the rainy season is upon the Peruvian Andes and the nights are very cold, houses are not heated and the patchwork corrugated metal roofs leak. Dirt floors become mud after a few hours. The children lack warm clothes during this difficult time. Jackets and shoes are the primary need right now. Food continues to be an issue as well. Malnutrition is a major concern at the project. You might be under the impression that a small donation is hardly worth the stamp to send it. Nothing could be farther from reality. A $20 USD donation provides a child with a warm jacket and a pair of shoes. $100 USD provides a family with a year's supply of rice. A complete dental visit in Peru is just 20 soles.
